Patented System Designed for Low, Moderate, Highly-Critical Expansive & Rocky Soils to be Marketed by PHS Across U.S.
PLEASANT HILL , CA (January 6, 2006) – Pacific Housing Systems™, Inc.,announced the patented WAFFLEMAT system developed by CONCO in 1995 has been exclusively licensed to PHS for sales and distribution outside Northern California. Over 6.5 million sq. ft. of concrete has been poured on the WAFFLEMAT during the past ten years without one structural callback or failure. The WAFFLEMAT allows for expansive soil to rise under a post-tension slab as it is monolithically poured over an innovative foundation system forming a waffle design. It is a perfect solution for low, moderate and highly-critical expansive and rocky soil conditions, and is a companion offering with the PHS Elevated Slab and Raised Wood Floor foundation systems.
Matt Gonsalves, Founder and Chairman of CONCO, Inc. and WAFFLEMAT creator, said, “The WAFFLEMAT System is easily implemented in both post-tension and/or rebar applications. It has, since 1995, presented the best of both worlds to developers faced with the need to deliver maximum productivity with the highest possible reliability at the lowest cost. We know the WAFFLEMAT will be a great addition to Pacific Housing Systems’ product line, and are excited to have them share the wonderful success we have experienced with the WAFFLEMAT in California with every residential builder across the United States.”
The WAFFLEMAT system is quick to set-up and pour. The system sits on pad grade, and comes in either 8½“or 12” high 19” x 19” thermal grade heat resistant WAFFLEBOXES (note: the boxes are made of recycled plastic and are “environmentally friendly”). The WAFFLEMAT is created by connecting a series of WAFFLEBOXES together, and evenly spacing them throughout the footprint area. A 5” post-tension or rebar reinforced concrete slab is then monolithically poured, the plastic WAFFLEBOXES allowing for any expansive soil movement. The pour also creates concrete beams running through the footprint and perimeter.
The system can be easily installed, and offers the builder labor and set-up time savings. The plumbing is brought up through the WAFFLEBOXES with rebar reinforcement. The slab set up and pour is a two-day or less process, eliminating trenching and reducing soil preparation by providing less over excavation and re-compaction, dramatically reducing building cycle-time.
The WAFFLEMAT posses the greatest floor stiffness of any system in its class, possessing sufficient strength to resist differential swelling resulting from landscaping practices, surface drainage or flooding from any source. In addition, the WAFFLEMAT does not require presoaking underlying soil pads, and there is no need for footings – meaning, no earth spoils. And, since the WAFFLEMAT slab is typically 12” above grade, it provides the option of no gravel, sand, or moisture barrier.
Tom Richards, President and CEO of Pacific Housing Systems, said, “As a systems integrator specializing in foundations for residential homebuilders developing in areas of marginal soil, the WAFFLEMAT is a tremendous addition to our family of systems. Not only do we gain the ability to distribute a system that has a ten year track record of 6.5 million sq. ft. of residential living spaced poured without one structural callback, we become the only company in today’s marketplace to offer a solution for every – low, moderate, high and critical – soil condition.”
